Winton YMCA A (Division 1) won the Times & Directory Cup beating Lynwood A (Premier) 5-4 in the final played on Tuesday 30th April.

Winton represented by Anthony Forster (+9), Julian Hewlett (+9) and Martin Poulson (+13) overcame a determined Lynwood side represented by Geoff Ware (+10), Jamie Trevillion (+6) and David Crossley (+7) in a most enjoyable and entertaining match.

The match started with Geoff beating Anthony 2-0 and Jamie beating Julian 2-1 giving Lynwood a 2-0 lead before Martin pulled a match back beating David 2-0 to make the match score 2-1.

The fourth match between Jamie and Anthony produced the best match of the night. Anthony took the first game 31-27 with some great attacking play.

In the second game Jamie clawed his way back to be ahead 30-26. However, Anthony levelled at 30 all only to lose the game 30-31.

Jamie went on to take the final game 31-28.

Overall the match had everything, two players who could forehand and backhand attack and counter attack by blocking, Jamie's defensive qualities in retrieving Anthony's 'topspin' attack, and both players counter-hitting fast 'topspin' returns.

This gave Lynwood a 3-1 lead.

However, Martin again pulled back the match score to 3-2 by beating Geoff 2-0 with some backhand 'topspin' drives.

Julian then played David and won 2-0 which levelled the match score at 3-3.

It was now the turn of the two undefeated players, Jamie and Martin, with Jamie winning with some outstanding attacking shots 2-0.

Anthony then beat David 2-0 to again level the match at 4-4, this after being 3-1 down.

In the final match the tension was felt by all with Julian overcoming a determined Geoff 2-0 to win the overall match 5-4.

A most absorbing match, which was well supported and played in a friendly but competitive manner.

Well done to Jamie in winning all his three games - a 'class player' with a great future.

The 'Plate' competition was won by Bournemouth Sports H (Div 1) beating New Milton E (Div 3) 5-1 in the final played on Wednesday 17th April.

Bournemouth Sports H represented by J-D Marshall (+12 handicap), Daniel Prakesh (+14) and Becky Kuzu (+15) and New Milton E (Div 3) was represented by David Sutton (+18), Max Doohan (+18) and Simon Golding (+18).

Although the match score looks an easy win for Bournemouth Sports this was not the case with four of the six matches going to the final game.

In the first match J-D playing David was easily beaten in the first game 21-31 but gradually became more consistent with his forehand topspin, narrowly winning the second game 31-29 and finally the third 31-28.

Daniel won the second match beating Max 31-23 and 31-24.

However, the third match between Becky and Simon was the match of the night.

Becky won the first game 31-28, Simon coming back strongly in the second with more controlled hitting 25-31, with the third and final game reaching 30-30 all with some good controlled topspin and blocking from both players.

Simon then produced a good long service but Becky hit a topspin forehand return past Simon to win the game 31-30 enabling Bournemouth Sports to take a 3-0 lead.

Daniel then played David in a humorous and well contested match.

The match swayed one way and then the other before Daniel finally winning 31-29, 26-31 and 31-29.

J-D then played Simon with J-D playing a 'captains innings' and being very consistent with his forehand topspin winning 31-25 and 31-26 enabling Bournemouth Sports to take a 5-0 winning lead.

Becky played the final match against a determined Max who provided some good defensive play in a very tight encounter, with Becky losing 28-31, 31-29 and 29-31 which made the match score 5-1.

The match was played in the most enjoyable, humorous and friendly manner and credit must go to all the players.

Congratulations to both winners and commiserations to both runners-up on what were two enjoyable but well fought matches.
