BDTTA FINALS NIGHT 2008/2009 - REPORT

Friday, 27th February 2009

An evening of some very fine table tennis culminated in a spectacular match between Mark Butler (Merton) and James Whitehorn (Bmth Sports) as James mounted his defence of the Premier title. James had already seen off Louie-La (Bmth Sports) in defence of his Bmth Closed title and got off to a good start in the Premier by winning the first end against Mark 11-9. It was then nip and tuck as Mark won the second end, James took the third, then Mark took the fourth to set up a scintillating decider. Mark was leading 10-6 but James pegged it back to deuce but eventually lost 11-13 in some breath-taking exchanges to see the title slip from his grasp.

Competing with James for the title of busiest player of the evening, nine-year-old Hugo Pang from Bmth Sports also took part in four finals and won two of them. He beat Rebecca Kuzu (Bmth Sports) for the Junior Under-13, but then lost to Saul Harris (Bmth Sports) in the Junior Under-15. Undaunted, he defeated his team mate Lewis Proudley for the Div 4 title but then went on to lose to Max De Kment (Winton YMCA) in the Bmth Handicap final. At only nine, Hugo is definitely one to watch for the future.
