THE RON VENTON MEMORIAL CUP

2018 - Winner: Poole/Bournemouth

Following the demise of the Poole Table Tennis Association last year, Bournemouth agreed to take over the responsibility of organising and funding the town match between Poole / Bournemouth and Okehampton, which is played at the alternative venues each year. This year it was Poole / Bournemouth's turn to play the role of host.On the 23rd June, 15 players from each town met at the Dorset Table Tennis Centre to do battle for the Ron Venton Memorial Cup which, since 2011, has never been won by the away side. Fortunately, as far as Poole / Bournemouth was concerned, history repeated itself and the home side were declared the winners after four hours of intense competition. The format for the event was the same as the one used by the Bournemouth League and each of the five teams ranked by ability. In Division One Poole / Bournemouth won with a clean sweep 10-0. Division Two lost 3-7, Division Three also lost 4-6, Division Four won 8-2 and the match was sewn up by Division Five winning 9-1.Photographs show the home and away teams and a doubles match between the Division One teams with Division Two teams in the background.A buffet meal was provided at the half way point, kindly prepared by Melisa White, wife of Pete, the competition organiser, and drinks were sold on behalf of the Special Olympic movement, raising £25.00 for that charity.
