BDTTA FINALS NIGHT 2007/2008 - REPORT

Friday, 16th May 2008

At the Bournemouth and District Table Tennis Association Finals Night held at Winton YMCA on Friday 16th May 2008, James Whitehorn swept the board by winning both his singles finals and helped to win his two doubles finals. 21-year-old James from Broadstone started the ball rolling by joining with Tom Andrews from Bournemouth Sports to just pip Lynwood players Mark Werner and Alan Smith by 3-2 in the Men's Doubles.

James went on to beat his doubles partner Tom Andrews convincingly in three straight games in the Premier Division final and then did likewise against premier's Mathew Haynes (Ringwood) in the Bournemouth Closed. James capped his evening by partnering his sister Joy Whitehorn (Bournemouth Sports) to overcome Hannah Hicks and Stephen Foster (both from Bournemouth Sports) in three straight games to win the Mixed Doubles.

Nathan Bingham from Bournemouth Sports also had an excellent evening by winning all of his three matches. 15-year-old Nathan who hails from Tuckton took the Div 2 title by beating Adam Elcock (North Bmth) in three straight ends and went on to beat his club mate Div 1's Stephen Foster by 3-1 in the Junior Under 18s. He met another club mate, premier's Tom Andrews in the Bournemouth Closed Handicap who, with a scratch start found the ever-improving Nathan's 11 start a bridge too far.

The youngsters had to share some of the limelight with wily veteran Danny Allen (Merton) who won the 40+ and 60+ titles. He missed out on the 50+ title by losing by 12-10 in the fifth game against fellow premier player Brian Bickell (Kinson) but got his revenge by turning the tables on him in the 60+ final.
